More than 40,000 Jamaicans are to receive titles under the National Land Titling Programme, which was officially launched yesterday.

The programme which is being led by the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, involves collaboration among a number of agencies to improve the efficiency in the delivery of titles.

Among these are Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ), National Housing Trust (NHT), Administrator General’s Department, and the Land Administration and Management Programme (LAMP). A coordinator for the programme has also been appointed.

During the launching ceremony, held at the Christ the Redeemer Church in Seaview Gardens, some 63 persons from the communities of Seaward Pen, Seaview Gardens, and Tower Hill received their certificates of title.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, in her address at the function, stressed the Government’s commitment to enabling Jamaicans to own land.

“My administration is on a mission to improve the lives of all the people of the country. Land and home ownership must never be restricted by class and where we live. We are placing land ownership in the hands of the people,” she said.

According to the Prime Minister, by providing land titles, the Government is “building an ownership society in Jamaica,” and enabling persons to provide security for their families.

Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Transport Works and Housing, Dr Morais Guy, encouraged the beneficiaries to safely secure the titles and to use the documents for the betterment of themselves and their families.

Among the beneficiaries is Seaview Gardens resident, Cleveland Williams, who is physically disabled.

He expressed gratitude, noting that the title had been a long time coming.
