Over 200 Charged with Corruption in Panama

Some 250 people, most of them officials linked to the former Government of President Ricardo Martinelli were charged by Panama’s Public Ministry with crimes against the public administration.

Former ministers, former directors of public agencies, business people and other figures are also under investigation for committing alleged economic crimes and for illegally intercepting communications.

A contract to buy dehydrated food for 45 million USD dollars through an extinct National Aid Program is among the most relevant cases under investigation since 2014. One of the people charged in this process is former President Martinelli who ruled Panama from 2009 to 2014.

Telephone espionage is another crime under investigation. At least, 150 filed charges for the phone talks’ being intercepted by equipment the former administration purchased from an Israeli enterprise for 13.4 million dollars.
