On Tuesday, a boat of illegal migrants with 53 Haitian nationals on board was intercepted in the West Caicos region.

The interception of this vessel, a 35-foot sloop, was carried out in cooperation with several agencies, including: the US Coast Guard, the Turks and Caicos Islands Coastal Radar Station and the Royal Police Marine Unit.

At 4 pm the sloop docked in Providenciales, where Haitian illegal migrants were arrested by immigration officials and other Task Force officials. The police confirmed that the boat carried 16 women and 37 men, indicating that the 53 migrants were currently detained and being processed for their deportation to Haiti.

The Minister of Border Control said that illegal migration threatened the life and livelihoods of the people of the islands of the archipelago and that those engaged in trafficking in human beings would be prosecuted with all the severity of the law. He advises all persons to strictly observe the immigration laws of the Turks and Caicos Islands, because anyone found in violation will be dealt accordingly.
