In a congratulatory message to the athletes, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Chairman and Prime Minister of Grenada Kieth Mitchell said he was ”extremely proud” of their performances.

He congratulated the athletes, and recognised the successes of the participants of the Caribbean region in the World Championships of track and field, as much conventional as disabled athletes, especially Usain Bolt, and extended best wishes to him as he goes in a transition out from athletics.

The CARICOM Chairman recognized Bolt’s victories and records, the service, the pride and happiness he brought to the Caribbean people, also encouraged his colleagues to ‘redouble our efforts in working with local, private and international entities to ensure that we don’t only see sports as an opportunity for development of our nationals, but appreciate the immense possibilities, exposure and potential that public and private partnerships can bring to our Region.’

Mitchell said that the Caribbean presence in the last edition of the World Championship attracted the eyes of people from all the continents, reflected in the victories of the Trinitarian 4×400 relay for men, victor of the US in the finals, and others such as Trinitarian javelin male thrower Akeem Stewart, who set a world record for disabled athletes; Grenadian Kirani James in the long jump, Bahaman Steven Gardiner, Trinidadian Khalifa St. Fort and Jereem Richards, and Saint Lucian Levern Spencer among others.
