Venezuela Rejects New US Sanctions Against its Democracy – Communiqué

Communiqué

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela strongly rejects the new attack by the U.S. Government against Venezuelan democracy through the intended application of sanctions which are unilateral, illegal and violate international law, against eight Venezuelan citizens who are being subjected to a criminalization attempt for their participation in a democratic, constitutional process, that is the result of the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people.

We reiterate that this illegal and absurd actions constitute a clear violation of international law given that their sole purpose is to bend the sovereign will of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The U.S. Government once again shows it bears little interest for democracy and people’s self-determination, as well as for the respect of human rights, especially the right to vote and to the observation of the decisions of the people.

The United States of America intends to punish Venezuelan citizens for simply having promoted the National Constituent Assembly, as well as for having been elected, thus formalizing the political persecution of those defending the democratic process in Venezuela. This is such a gross action that it even intends to sanction one of the victims, among other things, for being a brother of President Hugo Chávez Frías.

We say with our Liberator Simon Bolivar as he wrote in his Jamaica Letter: “The veil has been torn asunder. We have already seen the light, and it is not our desire to be thrust back into darkness. The chains have been broken; we have been freed, and now our enemies seek to enslave us anew.”

The National Constituent Assembly does not obey any imperial or foreign power whatsoever; it is the expression of the original and sovereign power of the free and independent People of Venezuela, and as such, it shall continue to act with the purpose of maintaining dialogue, peace and harmony among the Venezuelan people. No external threat will make Venezuela relinquish the path of peace, participative and protagonistic democracy, and social justice that the People have decided to undertake. We shall never recognise such an aggression.

The National Constituent Assembly shall guide the life of the nation through a greater constitutional dialogue and understanding for the sake of peace and national independence. We have written a new glorious page of our history of freedom and self-determination.
