Jamaica to Send 120 Soldiers to Hurricane Ravaged Dominica

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the Government will be making cash contributions totalling US$200,000 to help with hurricane relief in Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica.

One-hundred-thousand dollars will be provided to each country.

More than two weeks ago, category five storm, Hurricane Irma, devastated Barbuda which resulted in the government evacuating the entire island.

Last Monday another category five storm, Hurricane Maria, caused widespread displacement, destruction, and death in Dominica.

Holness told parliamentarians that the Government sympathises with the affected countries and has stepped forward to provide a helping hand.

The Prime Minister also told the House that 120 Jamaica Defence Force soldiers are to be deployed to Dominica to, among other things, help with maintaining law and order as well as provide relief support.

He said the first batch arrived in the island Tuesday and the two other teams are expected to arrive Wednesday morning.

Additionally, Jamaica is to send a four-member technical and advisory support team to the eastern Caribbean country to provide support in rebuilding.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Holness disclosed this afternoon that the government has spent $50 million to bring home more than 200 Jamaicans from islands affected by hurricanes Irma and Maria.
