Jamaica: By-Elections Set For October 30

Prime Minister Andrew Holness last night announced an October 9 nomination day and October 30 election day for by-elections in three vacant parliamentary seats during a mass meeting in Annotto Bay, St Mary.

During his announcement, Holness, leader of the Jamaica Labour  Party (JLP), urged the mass crowd gathered in Annotto Bay to support JLP candidate Dr Norman Dunn, who will face off against the People’s National Party’s (PNP) Dr Shane Alexis for the constituency of South East St Mary.

South East St Mary has been without a  parliamentary representative since the sudden death Member of Parliament Dr Winston Green in August.

In addressing hundreds of JLP party supporters, Holness argued that Dunn is the best man for the job, claiming that despite his loss in the 2016 parliamentary election, he remained visible throughout the constituency, seeing to the needs of the people.

Two other vacancies in South West and South St Andrew are also up for grabs following the retirements of former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and former government minister Dr Omar Davies, both of the PNP.
