Denunciations of Right Wing Coup in Peru Grow

Diverse sectors are multiplying today the denunciations on destabilization of the institutionalism and consequent coup risk by actions of the Conservative Popular Force (FP), in Peru.

Social organizations and personalities called to defend democracy, after the denunciation of the centrist newspaper La República, about a ‘continued coup’ of FP that has among its alternatives the destitution of President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

The right-wing party denies the accusation and its general secretary, José Chlimper, ruled out that FP seeks such an extreme measure or has anti-democratic objectives and tried to justify legal actions against four judges of the Constitutional Court and the prosecutor of the Nation, Pablo Sánchez, as well as threats to a media outlet.

‘A constant and growing offensive, led by Fuerza Popular and its leader Keiko Fujimori, is strangulating democracy,’ the newspaper reported yesterday, pointing out that ‘the deployment of the coup-strikes subjugates autonomy, independence, and prerogatives with the aim of infiltrating or capturing the powers or organisms that resist to it.’ Progressive parliamentarian Marisa Glave pointed out that FP uses its parliamentary majority for coup purposes and called on the democratic parliamentary sectors to coordinate actions with civil society to stop a coup against democracy, as happened in the 1990s.
