The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) says the Eat Jamaican campaign launched 14 years ago has saved the Jamaican economy over J$70 billion since its inception.
“The Jamaica Agricultural Society continues to be very proud and exciting about the achievement of the Eat Jamaican campaign launched in 2003 … this campaign has been a game changer for the Jamaican economy and has been the most impactful campaign since our Independence in 1962,” said JAS president Norman Grant at the monthly meeting of the Kingston and St Andrew Association of Branch Societies held at the JAS head office in Church Street downtown Kingston.
Grant said that “through the joint efforts of the JAS, Ministry of Agriculture, RADA, 4-H, our over-250,000 farmers and fisher folk, and other stakeholders the Eat Jamaican campaign has directly helped to right-side the Jamaican economy and has saved the country over J$70 billion through the reduction of food imports, increased domestic production from 491,000 tonnes in 2003 to 668,000 tonnes in 2016, resulting in 38 per cent increase in domestic crop production”.
“The JAS will intensify the Eat Jamaican campaign by asking our Jamaican consumers is eat local this Christmas,” said Grant.
He added that while some local products could be more expensive than normal due to the effects of natural and man-made disasters on the sector this year, “the JAS is confident that there will be adequate supplies of agricultural produce for this Christmas season”.
