Bolivian Foreign Minister Fernando Huanacuni affirmed that the US Chargé d”Affaires in La Paz, Peter Brennan, violated sovereignty and multilateral agreements by meeting with an opposition politician.
This week, President Evo Morales denounced that Brennan and other members of the diplomatic mission met with an opposition leader, to whom they offered support to present their candidacy in the 2019 elections.
Shortly after, the Chargé d’Affaires and former President Carlos Mesa admitted the meeting, but affirmed that it was a ‘courtesy’ visit for the presentation of new US representatives.
According to the Vienna Convention, any presentation of officials is made through the representatives of the resident State, not individuals, warned the head of Bolivian diplomacy.
Huanacuni assured that the Brennan-Mesa meeting has a different character to a diplomatic relationship from State to State.
